How We Shape Our Environmental Protection Actions
The foundation of our environmental protection efforts is our environmental management system, EMAS. Our actions and activities are based on the pillars of environmental policy and environmental strategy embedded within it.
Since 2001, we have organized our environmental protection efforts with EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme). This voluntary environmental management system enables us to combine business and environmental protection in a forward-looking manner.
EMAS is a voluntary and demanding European environmental management system. It includes annual operational audits of environmental performance as well as a review of our efforts, progress, and potential for improvement by an external auditor every two years. We publish these results annually in our environmental statement. The EMAS certificate confirms our ongoing pursuit of a better environment step by step.
Through the high standards set by EMAS, we continuously establish high environmental standards as a brewery to improve our performance and make it measurable through the system behind EMAS. For over 20 years, we have consistently met this standard, contributing to the creation of a better environment.
In 2011, we became the first brewery in the world to determine the greenhouse gas emissions of beer across the entire value chain "from field to glass." From this, we derive our climate strategy as well as our goals and measures.
Creating a CO2 footprint is fundamentally important as a status assessment. We have obtained scientifically validated figures that precisely reflect our brewing methods and their effects. These figures show us effective levers to further reduce our CO2 emissions.
The success proves us right: we have already managed to reduce our CO2 emissions by approximately 70% compared to 1998. Therefore, we can proudly say: We embarked on the right path early on – towards the newly formulated EU climate protection goals (90% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2040 compared to 1990).

Environmental Pact Bavaria
The Environmental and Climate Pact Bavaria is one of the most successful environmental initiatives nationwide. Hofbräu Munich has been a member since 2003. After participating more than five times in a row, we are now proud holders of the Gold Certificate as a special distinction.
The idea behind the Environmental Pact Bavaria is to motivate businesses and other entities to implement operational environmental protection measures beyond legal requirements. As participants, we carry out these environmental protection measures specifically for our industry and present them on the internet platform for others to emulate.
B.A.U.M. e.V.
The German Environmental Management Association is a corporate network for sustainable business practices. The guiding principles are the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement. As we support these goals and integrate them into our actions as a brewery, we have been a member of B.A.U.M. e.V. since 2016.
